Create a Math Environment. A Parent-Helper Book for Those Who Want Arithmetic Made Touchable. First Edition.
Owens, Vivian W.
This book describes how parents can develop a mathematical environment for children in the home. Four major areas are emphasized: whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and basic geometry. Section 1 "'Shoebox' Activities," provides activities to teach specific concepts within a manageable time period. Materials are listed and diagrams illustrate procedures. A discussion guide can assist in preparing dialogue leading to verbal and computational understanding. Section 2, "Quickies," is a fun section containing problems to challenge the child to think and look for reasons or patterns. Section 3, "Story Problems," contains word problems presented in the form of stories. Section 4, "Arithmebuildity," calls for applying skills and knowledge already gained and using higher order thinking skills and imagination. Section 5, "Reinforcers," looks for everyday chores or involvements that have benefits related to mathematics. The description of each activity is 1-3 pages in length, and contains a very brief discussion of the concept student, a list of materials needed, the procedure, observations to note and a brief discussion. Age appropriateness is also indicated. Appendices include a list of necessary materials, math related toys and games, and math related books for children. Also included are answer guides and a glossary. (MKR)
