Chicago Kids Count: Community by Community Profiles of Child Well-Being.
Voices for Illinois Children, Chicago.
This report provides a statistical portrait of child and family well-being in the city of Chicago. It presents up-to-date information from government sources and includes trend data where available. The report notes several patterns emerging from these data. Although the child population is shrinking, the proportion of children facing risk of educational failure, lack of adequate health care, and economic hardship is increasing. Also, the problems that children face are not isolated; children often face multiple risk factors in their communities. Though the serious problems examined in this report affect a broad range of children, a review of these statistics reveals a wide variance in the well-being of Chicago's white and minority populations. The report includes brief discussions of the following topics: (1) Kids First Agenda; (2) demographics; (3) education, with a close-up report on student mobility; (4) heath, with a close-up report on communities and health; (5) children with special needs, including a close-up report on teen mothers; and (6) economic security, with close-ups on issues of poverty and race, and on the working poor. The rest of the report consists of data for each community in the city and the city as a whole, arranged in the categories of education, health, economic security, and special needs. The report also includes a race and ethnicity table for the city and each community. (TJQ)
