This book consists of 14 essays that focus on the condition of urban Appalachians (former migrants to cities from Appalachia and their descendants). Chapters address issues of health, environment, education, and cultural identity in an urban Appalachian context, and are meant to be a resource for educators and health and human service professionals involved with this social sector. Part I covers current migration patterns, recent demographic information, and cultural perseverance among urban Appalachians. Part II is devoted to health-care and environmental concerns of urban blacks and Appalachians. Part III focuses on social and educational issues of urban Appalachian children, particularly those marginalized by poverty or neighborhood.
