Reaching Adult Learners with Whole Language Strategies.
Kroeker, Tirza; Henrichs, Margaret
Weaving learners' everyday stories with those of other teachers, volunteers, and students, this book shares strategies and experiences designed to empower adult learners in alternative literacy programs. Strategies in the book came from educators in such diverse settings as college developmental reading and writing, learning disabilities, adult literacy, English-as-a-Second-Language programs, as well as in workplace programs, high schools, adult basic education/general education development, and prison classrooms. Chapters in the book are: (1) Destination Literacy; (2) Learning How to Teach Adult Literacy Learners; (3) Creating a New Portfolio; (4) John: A Case Example; (5) Individual Strategy Lessons; (6) Group Strategy Lessons; (7) Whole Language Programs Focusing on Specific Needs; (8) Evaluation; and (9) Confirming Our Beliefs about Whole Language. An afterword (Theoretical Memos and Beyond: Questions for Teachers), six self-needs evaluation instruments, and seven bibliographies are attached. (RS)
