This document reports the results of a survey conducted to determine the employment status of the 1989-90 cohort of graduates from the Faculties of Education of the Province of Alberta. Also under investigation was the proportion of graduates who entered the teaching profession in Alberta immediately upon graduation. Recent projections of teacher supply and demand in Alberta indicate that there is likely to be an increasing demand for teachers generally and in certain subject specialties in particular. A sample of 618 Bachelor of Education graduates in Spring 1990 was drawn from 3 Alberta universities. It was found that 95 percent of these graduates had applied for an Alberta teaching certificate, but that only 47 percent were teaching full-time in Alberta schools. Questionnaires were sent to a random sample of 542 graduates of education faculties, of which 282 (52 percent) were returned. Of the 282 respondents, almost 60 percent are teaching full time and approximately 23 percent are teaching part time. Almost 95 percent of these teachers have an Alberta teaching certificate. The findings of the study confirm Alberta Education's estimate that approximately 37 percent of the graduates from the Faculties of Education in Alberta do not teach in Alberta. Informants' suggestions formed the basis for policy recommendations that focus on attracting teachers to rural Alberta schools and on ensuring that hiring practices of school boards are fair toward older female applicants.
