Where They Stand: A Digest of Organizational Policies on Child Care and Education.
Flood, Marilyn J., Ed.
This digest summarizes the specific policies and recommendations of 45 national educational and public policy organizations in the areas of education reform, early childhood education, quality child care, and collaborative approaches to the care and education of children. The major portion of the document is divided into sections highlighting specific organizations. Each section briefly describes the organization, provides abstracts of recent publications or policy statements on specific educational and day care policies, and lists recommendations made by the organization. An opening summary notes that most organizations agreed that: (1) all children should have access to early childhood programs; (2) schools must collaborate with other agencies to deliver ancillary services such as day care and health care; (3) parent involvement must be encouraged; (4) the private sector should play an important role in education and child care; (5) schools must play a larger role in providing day care; (6) all programs should use developmentally appropriate curriculum; and (7) federal and state governments must take a more active role in initiating, implementing, and financing educational and day care programs. Four appendixes provide a chart of organizations' policy positions, a bibliography of organization publications, a list of the 45 organizations with addresses and telephone numbers, and a list of additional resource organizations.
