Small School, Giant Dream: A Year of Hoosier High School Hoopla.
Moscowitz, Raymond
This book tells the story of the 1989-90 basketball season at Northfield High School, a small rural school in Wabash County, Indiana. That year, Steve McClure began his fourth season as varsity basketball coach at Northfield with a 56-14 record. For McClure, basketball was more than team play; basketball was an integral part of personal growth for those who play the game. And in this small community, high school basketball was more than an extracurricular activity; it was a way of life for many community members. The book describes McClure's high school sports career and his journey from a spirited college student to a high school coach who stresses Christian values and the building of character among his players. Team members are also profiled. The book provides highlights of key games in a thrill-packed season including the team's loss in the state semi-finals. The story illustrates not only the tremendous community support awarded to high school basketball, but also how, with encouragement and determination, even small schools can have successful sports programs.
