For 8 years, the Community College of Allegheny County has offered a non-traditional science course, Chemistry of Art, which enables students to appreciate more fully the bonds and commonalities existing between the sciences and the arts, where creativity is common to both and where hands-on experience, visualization, and critical thinking can become one. Significant emphasis is placed on making non-science students aware that they are chemists in their fields and science students realize their artistic potential. Major concepts covered in the course are: (1) the language of chemistry, including the art of the periodic table, atoms and elements, chemical reactions, and balancing equations; (2) chemistry of textiles; (3) paint chemistry; (4) chemistry of photography; (5) physics and chemistry of color; and (6) Leonardo da Vinci as artist and scientist. Students work in the chemistry laboratory, where they perform experiments with measurement, pigment preparation, glass sculpture, solvent effect on fibers, and the Ph of everyday chemicals. In the art/photography laboratory they experiment with mixing light colors, using photography with a microscope, using the camera as an instrument of science and art, and developing film. In many cases students have pursued a new direction of studies after completion of the course. (KRN)
