Understanding the Haitian Student: Resources for the French Instructor.
Garrott, Carl L.
Problems encountered by Haitian immigrant student in United States schools are examined, and information is offered to help secondary and college French teachers deal with this population equitably and knowledgeably. Difficulties for immigrants from Haiti, particularly students, include differences between Haitian Creole and standard spoken French and the attitudes held about Creole, attitudes about European French culture and Haitian culture, and racial bias manifested in classroom interaction and teacher expectations. Information for teachers includes: a survey of the major points of Haitian history; a description of the structure of Haitian secondary education and the "baccalaureat," including commonly-held attitudes about education and social class; notes on Haitian higher education; and useful words and expressions in Haitian Creole. Contains 14 references. (MSE)
