This 60-item bibliography, a compilation of abstracts of books, articles, handbooks, conference proceedings, and newsletters published from 1978 through 1989, addresses various aspects of groups, programs and other self-help resources for parents and other family members of people with disabilities. Literature in the first section provides guidelines for group advocacy and working effectively within existing service delivery systems. The second section identifies resources concerned with key factors in group success or failure, the importance of clear communication, and several specific types of self-help groups. Section 3 focuses on parent empowerment in group leadership, providing advice for professionals working with parent support groups and discussing relations between parents and professionals in such groups. The role of professionals as consultants, sponsors and liaisons to support groups is explored in the resources listed in Section 4, with an emphasis on the importance of equality and mutual self-respect between self-help consumers and professionals. Much of the literature cited in the fifth section consists of research articles regarding parent support groups, including findings from evaluations of group effectiveness and descriptions of the parent mutual aid process. A final section covers effects of group participation, members' reasons for seeking support, and members' perceptions of help received from group involvement. (PB)
