This book is designed to provide specific and practical suggestions for teachers and tutors of adult students. It is divided into two major parts. Part 1, which is devoted to adult learning, includes information on the characteristics of adult learners, their expectations and motivation, and issues related to equal opportunities and access. Part 2 consists of four sections dealing with teaching adults. Discussed in the section on planning for learning are needs, aims and objectives, content, and consultation and negotiation. The following topics are discussed in the section on teaching methods: talks, lectures, and presentations; demonstration; individual practice and supervision; discussion; other methods; working with groups; asking questions; and using teaching resources. Discussed next are course and session evaluation, attendance and dropouts, self-evaluation, and student assessment. The final section includes guidelines for constructing lesson plans and conducting the first session and includes 21 suggestions for further reading and a brief discussion of staff development opportunities and organizations of interest to adult educators.
