Workers in five departments of the J.P. Stevens Plant in Clemson, South Carolina, participated in a workplace literacy project that was designed to increase participants' literacy and job skills and increase the literacy training efforts of textile plants in the Southeast. Major project activities included the following: identification of the literacy demands of each job at the factory, curricula appropriate for each job, and individual workers' job literacy deficiencies; development and implementation of model workplace literary skills enhancement training program; and dissemination of program materials to other textile plants in the area. Of the plant's 940 employees, 163 (17%) started the literacy classes and 95 (58%) of the original enrollees completed the program successfully. An independent evaluation confirmed that all project objectives were met successfully. (This package includes the final project report, project evaluation report, and eight appendixes.
