A Community Based Supported Employment Program for Persons with Severe Physical Disabilities and Mental Retardation. Final Report.
Butterworth, John; And Others
This report summarizes the results of a 3-year project in the metropolitan Boston (Massachusetts) area designed to demonstrate job placement and support for individuals with multiple disabilities that include severe physical disabilities and mental retardation. The report summarizes project outcomes, the cost and range of supports that participants received, and issues in the design and implementation of supports for individuals with multiple disabilities. The project placed 11 individuals in 14 jobs, based on a model that emphasizes career planning, job creation, and a broad approach to job site training and support that includes job accommodation and flexible use of a variety of sources of support. The greatest limitation in project implementation was the ability to identify a sufficient number of jobs in a timely way. Appendixes comprise the bulk of the report and contain participant demographic and employment data, a 10-page vocational profile form, a procedure manual for job creation and job restructuring, and a procedure manual for placement planning.
