Computers: Literacy and Learning. A Primer for Administrators. Roadmaps to Success: The Practicing Administrator's Leadership Series.
Marsh, George E., II
This book goes beyond explaining the continuing need for computer literacy and provides concrete examples of how to implement worthwhile, effective programs even under austere school budgets. The introduction explains the need to produce literate and technologically competent graduates able to compete in the global economy. The various applications of technology to instruction are described in chapter 2, and answers to commonly asked questions are provided in chapter 3. The fourth chapter shows how to make the best use of computers and describes a variety of settings, such as the one-computer classroom, the low-density computerized classroom, the high-density computerized classroom, the networked classroom, the computer lab, and the networked school. Chapter 5 describes ways to integrate computers with classroom instruction for personal productivity, adaptive/augmentation uses for exceptional students, multimedia instruction, teacher support, and telecommunications. The sixth chapter explains the uses of different telecommunications functions, and chapter 7 presents scenarios that illustrate the use of technology in the classroom. A conclusion is that the principal, as instructional leader of the school, can do much not only to improve education with computers, but also to strengthen America's economic future. One figure is included. (Contains 20 annotated references.) (LMI)
