Folktales: Teaching Reading through Visualization and Drawing. Kindergarten through Grade 5.
Rose, Laura
Intended to help young children learn to read with comprehension, this book uses visualization and drawing techniques with folktales. The folktales in the book (collected from around the world and freely adapted) were chosen to help primary- and middle-grade students increase their enjoyment and comprehension by eliciting a flood of rich visual images. The first section of the book discusses three teaching options. The first option (designed as a whole-class activity) is suitable for students of any age who are in the beginning stages of learning to read. The second option emphasizes the development of the visualization aspects of reading and can be completed in one teaching session. The third option is designed for use with older students who demonstrate a lack of reading comprehension or enjoyment. The second section of the book presents the 10 folktales, each 10 pages long, and each page having a small amount of text at the bottom to allow enough space for student-generated illustrations. (RS)
