Integrating Academic and Vocational Education: Implementation Guide. Second in a Series.
Blank, William E.; Scaglione, Janet B.
This implementation guide is designed to provide practical, useful help to vocational and academic teachers, administrators, and support personnel in integrated academic and vocational instruction. The introduction defines integration, discusses assessment of the status of current programs and the assumptions underlying integration, and presents the rationale for integrating academic and vocational education. The following topics are discussed in chapter 2 on basic approaches to implementing integration: reinforcing academics in vocational education, tying academics to real life and using applied learning, achieving vocational and academic teacher collaboration, using major projects and themes, and planning major restructuring of schools. The next three chapters discuss what teachers (both individuals and teams), departments and entire schools, and administrators and support staff can do to integrate academic and vocational education. The final chapter examines ways in which obstacles to integration can be overcome. The following items are appended: a list of 50 implementation ideas, examples of projects and themes, examples of academic concepts reinforced in vocational education, examples of making academic concepts job relevant, and 36 integration resources.
