Twenty of America's foremost leaders from business, education, and government met to develop a strategy for assisting the country's disadvantaged children and to send an action plan to President Bush for consideration at his education summit. The meeting's goal was to format active and practical models for the following basic ideas developed at an earlier meeting: (1) any environment that corporations help to establish or fund for early childhood education should include a component for disadvantaged children from the community in addition to employees' children; (2) collaborative efforts among corporations, legislators, and higher education and public school teachers would be necessary for the successful implementation of day-care and early education programs; (3) corporations must educate their managers and employees about the importance of supporting and being involved in educational systems; and (4) existing resources must be utilized in an improved manner to guarantee that those resources can deliver services where they are most needed. Acting on these ideas, the forum participants endorsed a proposal to make the nation's schools the "hub" of a comprehensive system of child care and early childhood education. The panel also set the framework for an interdisciplinary model for the training of business and education leaders at the university level. (JB)
