AIDS Prevention through Education: Sample Curriculum. Elementary.

This sample curriculum guide has been developed to assist districts in planning and implementing an Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) education program. Classes are to be conducted within the context of comprehensive health education. This document, which provides K-6 guidelines, is organized into 8 sections: (1) purpose, planning, and implementation of an AIDS education program, and basic premises underlying AIDS education; (2) steps in the development and implementation of an AIDS education plan; (3) evaluation criteria; (4) South Dakota administrative rule on AIDS education; (5) South Dakota statute on moral instruction; (6) guidelines for effective school health education to prevent the spread of AIDS; (7) basic facts about Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), including statistical tables; and (8) age appropriate sample curricula for K-6 students providing goals, expected outcomes, possible activities and worksheets. Also included is a copy of the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, published by the Centers for Disease Control, entitled "Guidelines for Effective School Health Education to Prevent the Spread of AIDS."
