This bibliography of 2,414 journal articles provides health professionals and others with quick references on health and related issues of American Indians and Alaska Natives. The citations cover articles published in U.S. and Canadian medical and health-related journals between 1950 and 1988. Five sections deal with major health categories and are divided into further subcategories. The first section, "Social and Cross-Cultural Aspects of Health and Disease," covers traditional health practices; archeology, demography, and anthropology; food, nutrition, and related disorders; pregnancy, family planning, and related problems; health and disease in infancy and childhood; aging (including geriatric programs); and psychology and acculturation. The next section, "Health, Health Education, and Health Care Delivery" includes general aspects of health and disease, health and dental care delivery, Indian Health Service, education and training of health care professionals, alcohol prevention and treatment programs, and education (particularly health education and special education). The "Genetics and Metabolism" section covers metabolism, serology, blood and blood groups, dentition, congenital anomalies, and HLA-antigens. The section on "Infectious Diseases" covers the gastrointestinal tract, parasitic infestations, liver and gallbladder infections, tuberculosis, the genito-urinary tract, respiratory infections, and ear and dental problems. Finally, topics in the last section, "Noninfectious and Chronic Health Problems," concern diabetes, hypertension and heart disease, alcoholism and substance abuse, mental health problems, intentional and unintentional injuries (including suicide), neoplasms, obesity, musculoskeletal diseases and disorders, child abuse and neglect, ophthalmology, and ear diseases and hearing disorders.
