I Want to Read: A Guidebook. Volumes I, II, and III.
Learning Research Inc., Evansville, IN.
This guidebook offers tips to those who guide people who want to learn to read and write. It is structured in three volumes, each accompanying a separate videotape. The three videotapes are 120 minutes, 90 minutes, and 120 minutes in length, respectively. The guidebook has four goals: (1) help those who guide learners to understand how the learner might feel; (2) be a guide to follow for each section of the videotape; (3) give ideas for activities so learners can get more practice from each section; and (4) give ways to help learners realize that they are making progress. Videotape one builds from the foundation of recognizing certain letters in words up to the various tricky dipthongs and silent letters of the English language. Videotape two introduces letter combinations and words that use them, more sentences, and the idea of plurals, punctuation, and paragraphs. Videotape three helps learners to improve reading comprehension and rate of reading, suggests further use of the dictionary, teaches many emergency and survival words, and introduces learners to cursive writing.
