Alternative Assessments in Practice Data Base. Project 1.2: Technical Assistance on Assessment Issues. Annual Report of Communication, Training and Dissemination Activities.
Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing, Los Angeles, CA.
The Center for Research on Evaluation, Standards, and Student Testing (CRESST) has developed an Alternative Assessments in Practice Data Base to support technical assistance needs and to promote the exchange of new assessment ideas. The database is designed to provide easy access and retrieval of information about ongoing and newly developed measures from across the country. It draws on the diverse assessment initiatives currently being implemented at local, state, and national levels as well as those of CRESST, curriculum and teacher groups, and other research and development providers. The new assessments being developed are alternatives to standard norm-referenced multiple-choice tests, such as essays and other constructed written responses, portfolios, exhibitions, demonstrations, and other performance measures. So far, the database consists of over 250 alternative assessments. Information for the database is collected through the New Student Asessments in Practice Protocol. The protocol contains: contact information; subject and topic area assessed; grade levels and student groups for which designed; cognitive skills assessed; response mode; administration context and requirements; characteristics of scoring; developmental status and available validity evidence; and availability. A protocol is included for each of the assessments in the areas of accounting-business, computer science, English-language arts, English as a Second Language, fine arts, foreign language, health-physical education, mathematics, science, social studies, work force readiness, integrated activities, and other.
