This curriculum unit is part of a larger project designed to introduce communication-based, culturally specific instructional materials on French-speaking African societies into foreign language curricula with the goal of increasing the appeal and relevance of French language study, especially to African-American students. The materials are intended for beginning-level French students. A communication-based approach to language learning helps students develop the skills necessary to produce and receive understandable messages. These skills include reading, writing, listening, and speaking in the target language, and focusing on materials in their cultural context. The lessons in this unit concern the geographic and cultural diversity of Francophone Africa. Each lesson includes a lesson overview, materials, lesson content, procedures, and student handouts. The included lessons are entitled: (1) "Une Introduction au Continent Africain"; (2) "La Diversite Geographique de L'Afrique Francophone"; (3) "Les Modes de Vie en Afrique Francophone"; (4) "Faisons une Visite a Abidjan"; and (5) "Le Mariage Chez les Tabwa."
