This guide describes the status of selected family resource programs in the United States and Canada. The first chapter provides detailed descriptions of 13 programs that offer collaborative and comprehensive services. These programs, which are often large and innovative, foster coalitions of service providers in order to offer an extensive range of services to families. The second chapter covers 10 programs that began as partnerships between schools and families, and were intended to encourage children's success in school. In the third chapter, 25 programs whose original purpose was to support and strengthen families and enhance parent competence are described. A total of 18 programs that have incorporated a family support component into an organization with a different, but perhaps related, primary function are covered in chapter 4. Chapter 5 provides descriptions of five state initiatives that offer family support services. Each of the 71 listings in the book provides an overview and brief history of the program, and information about the community served, program components and services, participants, staff, outreach efforts, evaluations, replication, funding, goals, suggestions, and publications. Chapter 6 includes four appendixes: (1) a state-by-state listing; (2) a demographic (urban, suburban, or rural) listing; (3) a listing by setting (such as school-based or hospital-based); and (4) a table showing the services each program provides.
