This statistical report, one of a series published every 3 years since 1975, consists of distribution data regarding medical college faculty by sex, ethnicity, degree, department, academic rank, age, tenure status, and year of first faculty appointment. It is organized into three sections, of which the second two constitute the bulk of the document. The first section includes a textual and graphic summary of data. The second section contains the data tables, and the third section presents a set of appendices reflecting other data breakdowns. Overall, the statistics indicate that as the faculty has grown between 1980 and 1990, women have joined in great numbers, especially at the assistant professor rank, and their percentage representation has sharply increased. However, a large differential in rank achievement still exists when promotions of men versus women hired at the same time are examined. Significant gains in faculty are shown in the primary care specialties of Internal and Family Medicine and in Pediatrics. In addition, these departments show the most significant growth for minority participation; in most other areas, smaller though solid gains are shown in faculty growth. (GLR)
