This unit presents five distinct options designed to allow high school students to explore a range of alternatives for U.S. policy toward the Arab-Israeli conflict. The unit includes a 10-day and a 5-day lesson plan. Both plans follow a similar sequence, first introducing the historical background of the conflict and presenting Arab and Israeli perspectives, then engaging students in a role play of U.S. options, and finally guiding them toward the development of their own ideas about U.S. policy. The five options put forth are: (1) the United States should actively support Israel's annexation of the territories; (2) the United States should support the creation of a Palestinian state and forge closer ties with the Arab world; (3) the United States should persuade all parties to accept an even-handed settlement; (4) the United States should withdraw from the region; and (5) the United States should support United Nations administration of the territories.
