This book of readings consists of selected papers presented under five topics: (1) Research and Theory--18 papers including research on visual effects on attitude and cognition, students of different field dependence levels, modern and postmodern design on reader perceptions of news, effects of gray shades, short-term memory capacity differences, developing thinking citizens across cultures, microcomputers, computer-generated animation, the use of real and computer generated models, effects of color code in graphic presentation, varying visual activities to impact cognitive processing, biological concepts through animated movies, describing picture content, nurturing creativity, and logical reasoning; (2) Curriculum Approaches--13 papers including topics on visual literacy and writing; picture book production; creative drama; geography; business, scientific, and art students; and the use of films in teacher education; (3) Text and Graphic Design--six papers including lexi-visual design, evolution of publishing technology, pixels, sign dictionary graphics, learner characteristics and instructional strategies, and deaf adult literacy; (4) Media and Technology--10 papers concerning medical education, visually impaired students, perceptual factors in television, training videotapes, television production, virtual reality and visual design; and (5) The Arts--nine papers on contemporary art, visual literacy and the technological age, use of color and motif, African American screen images, the Johnstown Flood, early Japanese photographs, image manipulation, a deaf poet's view, and questioning the verbal supremacy of traditional literary studies.
