Beyond Storybooks: Young Children and the Shared Book Experience.
Slaughter, Judith Pollard
Intended primarily for teachers and others who work with children from approximately three to eight years of age, this book suggests ways to make and introduce Big Book versions of well-loved predictable stories and describes how shared book experiences can lead to learning across the curriculum. The book presents teaching tips, book recommendations, ideas for classroom organization, complete descriptions of theme units, and suggestions for integrating shared book experiences in math, science, social studies, and throughout the literacy program. Chapters in the book are: (1) Why the Shared Book Experience?; (2) Getting Started; (3) Following Up; (4) The Writing Connection; (5) Across the Curriculum; and (6) Read-In Time. An appendix to the book presents an annotated bibliography of more than 100 predictable books, including all those mentioned in earlier chapters, and bibliographic listings of books containing stories from other lands and cultures, wordless books, and poetry collections and songbooks.
