Assistance for Educators in Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect. The Mandated Reporter Assistance Series.
Struck, Linda M.
This booklet is designed to help educators recognize and report cases of child abuse and neglect that come to their attention. The first section of the booklet provides legal definitions of abuse and neglect according to Virginia law, and lists indicators of physical abuse, physical neglect, sexual abuse, and emotional maltreatment. The second section examines questionable situations, describing the difference between abuse and discipline, corporal punishment, and situations that are not considered abuse or neglect under the law. The third and fourth sections discuss how and when suspected child abuse or neglect should be reported, and examine some of the implications of such reports, including the legal penalties for not reporting suspected child abuse and neglect. The fifth and sixth sections discuss techniques of responding to the child who reports being abused or neglected, and some of the actions that social service agencies take in investigating cases of suspected abuse. An appendix summarizes actions that social service agencies take when child care personnel are alleged to have abused or neglected children under their care, and provides the telephone numbers of local departments of social services at the county and city level in Virginia.
