In Michigan, a school-based bicycle helmet intervention program has been developed to increase the prevalence of helmet use among middle/junior high school students. The intervention involved approximately 3,100 students and their parents. The school-based intervention component of the project is the focus of this report. A two-tier intervention strategy was implemented in school systems in Oakland County (Michigan) to determine what level of intervention exposure motivates behavior change in this age group. Findings from the intervention provide useful knowledge to design and implement effective and efficient bicycle helmet behavior change programs. The main body of the document describes and evaluates the pilot program. Eight appendices incorporate: (1) abstracts of helmet testing study; (2) Oakland County population demographics; (3) school selection criteria; (4) intervention protocols; (5) letter to parents included with free helmets; (6) teacher's curriculum guide; (7) breakdown of telephone sample; and (8) pre- and post-intervention survey questionnaire.
