Access and Persistence: An Educational Program Model. Celebrating Cultural Diversity in Higher Education.
Sawchuk, Mariette T.
This report describes the key elements of an alternative access program at Mount St. Mary's College (California), from the recruitment and orientation of culturally diverse students to those ongoing academic and support services necessary to student persistence to graduation. The model is outlined in chapter II. Chapters III and IV describe how elements of the model operate at Mount St. Mary's. Described are the tutorial services that are available, the campus climate that helps foster study and learning, student orientation and tracking, individual testing and placement, curriculum development, and student advisement. Also examined are the general support services of financial aid, career counseling, and community outreach. The program offers guidelines and starting points for institutions interested in serving the needs of underprepared students, who are often from ethnic minorities. Appendices include descriptions of the English for Speakers of Other Languages and Dialects and the Strides Toward Educational Proficiency programs, as well as the school's Institutional Readiness Assessment questionnaire and a list of faculty development programs from 1986 through April 1991.
