This loose-leaf compendium includes three types of brief research summaries: "topical synthesis,""close-ups," and "snapshots." The single topical synthesis, by Kathleen Cotton, is entitled "Teaching Composition: Research on Effective Practices." Closeups consist of brief definitions, essential research findings, and guidelines for effective practices. The two closeups in this collection, also by Kathleen Cotton, are "Instructional Reinforcement" and "Monitoring Student Learning in the Classroom." Snapshots describe effective practices currently in place at various school districts and include the following four: "Peer Tutoring" and "Monitoring and Reinforcing Learning" (Kathleen Cotton) and "Clear, Consistent Discipline" and "Cooperative Learning" (Jocelyn A.
