The Adult Learner in Higher Education. A Resource and Planning Guide.

This planning guide and collection of resources is designed to help higher education faculty become more aware of current research and thinking on adult learning and to participate actively in institutional changes that make campuses, particularly in the California State University system, better able to meet the needs of adult students. Each of 11 modules in three parts focuses on a particular facet of the adult learner, and provides practical suggestions for addressing adult learner needs. Following an overview section which describes andragogy, the theory and practice of teaching adults, part I, "Adult Learners and Their Needs," contains the following sections: module 1: "The Adult Learner: Research and Implications"; module 2: "Developmental Needs of the Adult Learner"; module 3: "Educational Needs of the Adult Learner." Part II, "Institutional Strategies for Meeting the Needs of Adult Learners" includes modules 4 through 7, namely: "Providing Support Services for the Adult Learner"; "Facilitating Progression through Recognition of Prior Learning"; "Designing Curricula for the Adult Learner"; and "Instructional Delivery Options for the Adult Learner." Part III addresses individual strategies and includes module 8: "Providing Opportunities for Self-Directed Learning"; module 9: "The Importance of Experiential Learning"; module 10: "Effective Strategies for Teaching Adults"; and module 11: "Resources." An index is included as is a bibliography of about 120 items. (JB)
