School Health Program. Grade 3.
Northwest Territories Dept. of Education, Yellowknife.
In order for individuals to make informed decisions about their health, they must have support, information, and skills to help them understand what promotes their health and what they themselves can do to enhance health. The major goals of the Northwest Territories (Canada) school health program are: to provide factual information on the human body; to enable students to develop skills that, along with factual information, will allow them to make informed choices related to health; to enhance students' self-esteem through self-understanding; to enable students to develop attitudes which lead to positive lifestyle behaviors; and to promote lifestyle practices which are conducive to lifelong health. This guide contains instructional strategies, lesson plans, reproducibles, and teacher background materials for third-grade classes. The material is organized around the seven units of the program: mental and emotional well-being, growth and development, family life, alcohol and other drugs, nutrition, safety and first aid, and dental health. This guide also contains an introduction to the complete program, including scope and sequence charts outlining the major topics at each grade level. A discussion of the language development approach for students who are not proficient in English is also included. (IAH)
