The purpose of this guide is to assist teachers in planning and organizing for the use of computers as part of their everyday mathematics curriculum. Mathematics was chosen as the subject area to demonstrate how students can be taught problem-solving skills and strategies with the computer. However, this computer integration guide provides background information, ideas, specific programs, and sample units that can help teachers from other school subject areas introduce and use computers in their classrooms. This guide includes: (1) planning for instruction, which considers specific methods to integrate the computer into the classroom, the relationships between problem solving and, respectively, the typical mathematics curriculum and specific classroom practices, and elements of effective lesson planning; (2) organizing for instruction, which discusses group strategies, the one-computer classroom, the computer lab, sample computer activities, desirable student interactions, classroom management tips, methods of monitoring student progress, and tools for creative students; (3) integrating problem solving, which investigates Polya's problem solving model, other specific problem solving strategies, and methods to integrate software units, specifically The Super Factory, Appleworks, and Microsoft Works; (4) curriculum software correlation, which juxtaposes specific pupil performance objectives of the Edmonton (Alberta, Canada) Public School Board with particular software routines from a plethora of manufacturers; and (5) appendices that contain software evaluation forms, classroom planning outlines, and classroom activity sheets.
