New Jersey College Basic Skills Placement Testing, Fall 1991.
New Jersey Basic Skills Council, Trenton.
This report presents Fall, 1991 results of the New Jersey College Basic Skills Placement Testing which tests incoming college students and evaluates collegiate remedial courses. A summary of the findings notes that freshmen recorded poorer results on every section of the test compared to 1990 results, that in verbal skills 42 percent lacked proficiency, in computation 46 percent lacked proficiency and in elementary algebra 61 percent lacked proficiency. Other results are summarized by college sector, by 10-year trends (in verbal skills the percentage of test-takers who lacked proficiency reached a 10-year low), results for recent high school graduates (in 1990 and 1991 recent graduates were 58 percent of test-takers), by subgroups of recent graduates, and demographic changes. Another section treats dissemination of results to colleges, students, high schools, the state education board, the higher education community, and interested citizens. A final section treats outcomes for skill-deficient students who enroll in college remedial courses. Extensive figures and 25 tables present the data. Appendixes contain a description of the test, a list of participating independent and proprietary institutions, year to year score equating and a description of the proficiency levels. (JB)
