Job Discrimination. A Curriculum Packet about Immigration-Related Job Discrimination.
Nash, Andrea; Wright, Peggy
A curriculum packet is presented that is designed to give English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) teachers the information and tools they need to help students address the issue of job discrimination, especially discrimination based on citizenship status or national origin that may result from the employer verification requirement of the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986. IRCA requires employers to check the work authorization documents of all workers within 3 days of hiring them. This packet contains four sections as follows: (1) Immigrants and the Workforce (documenting experience, employer sanctions); (2) Understanding Our Documents (documents needed for work, purposes of documents, the I-9 form, questions and answers); (3) What Is Discrimination (prejudice versus discrimination, situations to investigate, discrimination laws, student research models); and (4) Responding to Discrimination (improper requests for documents, various scenarios related to English or citizenship requirements or showing documents, formal action against employers). Most sections include primary activities, readings, and follow-up activities. Both teacher and student texts are provided, including student worksheet pages and companion teacher pages with exercise answers or teaching suggestions. Appendices provide detailed information on questions related to: documents to be used in filling out the I-9 form, samples of completed I-9 forms, Green Cards, forms for filing charges of discrimination based on national origin or citizenship status (in both English and Spanish) and a list of various Massachusetts resources dealing with employment discrimination and other workplace problems.
