Accommodating Student Differences: A Resource for Teaching Gifted and Talented Children.
Alberta Dept. of Education, Edmonton. Education Response Centre.
This document presents a selection of teacher designed activities to help meet the needs of gifted and talented students. The four teaching units focus on creativity, independent study, critical thinking, and communication skills. Introductory material explains how the teachers of Parkland County (Alberta) worked together in informal and structured sharing as well as formal projects to develop the materials. The first unit, "Primarily Puppets", is intended to develop creativity in grades 1 to 3 in the subject areas of language learning, drama, and art. The second unit is titled "Munch on Munsch". It focuses on the development of independent study through language learning, art, music and math in grades 1 to 3 and on the development of leadership and social skills in grades 4 to 6. Activities can be used by cross graded pairs of students or by groups in which upper elementary students help younger learners. "Clean Up Your Act" helps students in grades 4 to 6 apply critical thinking skills to the concepts of waste management. Finally, "Signed, Sealed and Delivered" uses letters from history and literature to encourage junior high students to read and write letters themselves. Each unit contains a large variety of activities and complete instructions. (DB)
