A Report to the State Education Department on the New York State Mentor Teacher-Internship Program for 1986-1987.
Mager, Gerald M.; And Others
The Mentor Teacher-Internship (MT-I) Program is a major development in the theory, policy, and practice of teacher education in New York State. In the first year, 1986-87, 24 projects were designed and implemented. This report is organized into five parts. Part 1 provides an introduction and overview of the evaluation study and contains information regarding the purposes of the study, the study design and analysis, and the issue of confidentiality. Part 2 focuses on the nature of the pilot mentor-intern projects--their goals, structures, and resources--and a variety of issues related to developing and sustaining a local project. Part 3 focuses on the mentor-intern relationship; specifically, it provides information on who the mentors and interns were, how the matches between mentors and interns were made, and how the relationships formed and grew. Part 4 focuses on the impact the local projects have had on participants and other educators in the local setting, as well as on the school as an organization. Finally, part 5 draws a set of conclusions and offers a set of recommendations regarding future policy, planning, and practice related to the work of the MT-I Program. The appendix identifies the 24 projects. (25 tables, 5 figures) (MLF)
