Women in Technology.
El Paso Community Coll., TX.
The objective of the Women in Technology (WIT) program for the Texas Higher Education Year 1990-1991 was to increase women's employment in nontraditional technical-vocational occupations and enrollment in nontraditional technical-vocational education and training. WIT provided information on nontraditional careers to the community and provided individual academic, personal, and financial support to female students in technical-vocational classes. Project activities included the following: 111 presentations encouraging the discussion of the nongender-based occupations of the future; development of a sexual harassment workshop and flyer; participation in conferences; development of recruitment materials such as public service announcements and posters with return mailers in English and Spanish; responses to post cards of inquiry from 122 requesters; developing/implementing training programs for presenters and student lab aide recruiters; establishment of an advisory board; holding nontraditional career exploration workshops; offering tours of technology training at El Paso Community College; providing tutoring services and child care assistance; and organization and training of a student corps to assist in recruitment of women students. An evaluation showed an increase in the number of students declaring nontraditional majors. (Appendixes, amounting to approximately two-thirds of the report, include the following: texts of three WIT presentations; publicity and recruitment materials; response to postcard requests; agendas of seven WIT meetings; minutes of two advisory board meetings; fall and spring student letters regarding support groups; and newspaper articles on graduates.)
