Descriptive Study of Technical/Vocational Student Tracking in Texas.
Dallas County Community Coll. District, TX.
In order to establish a baseline for future recommendations, a study was conducted on what is currently being done and to determine strengths and weaknesses in the area of technical and vocational student tracking. Mail surveys were sent to all public community/junior colleges and technical institutes in Texas; 40 of 52 surveys were returned. The measure collected information on the following: institutional demographics, articulation programs, educational goals, special populations, outcome measures, use of placement services, former students, TEX-SIS (Texas Student Information Systems) follow-up system, description of resources, LONESTAR (Longitudinal Evaluation Student Tracking and Reporting), and needs assessment. Site visits were also made to obtain information about technical and vocational student tracking procedures. Findings indicated the following: (1) few institutions tracked articulation students; (2) most schools collected information regarding students' educational goals; (3) not all institutions reported collecting information on designated special population groups under the Carl D. Perkins Vocational and Applied Technology Act of 1990; (4) institutions varied widely in outcome measures used and definitions of successful performance; (5) less than half reported tracking student retention; (6) definitions, response rates, and methods of tracking former students varied greatly; and (7) 31 schools had tried to implement LONESTAR. (The survey is appended.) (YLB)
