This digest discusses how libraries of all types are using the facsimile (or "fax") machine to meet users' information needs. A definition of facsimile technology includes the components of a fax machine, the four types of fax machines, and the recent development of the "fax board," which allows a computer to transmit information to other fax machines or computers with fax boards. A brief history of the use of facsimile in libraries is then given and it is noted that libraries predominantly use this technology to speed interlibrary loan materials and requests. Also described is the current use of the fax to form combinations of academic, public, school, and special libraries to share information resources. A number of factors to be considered before implementing a fax service are listed, including questions that relate to both general and interlibrary loan usage policies.
