The numbers of women entering the workforce have steadily risen since the mid 1950s. The nature of the family unit has correspondingly changed; the family in which the man was the husband and breadwinner and the woman was wife and mother devoted full time to home and family is a rarity. The attempt on the part of working family members to accommodate the demands of both work and family has given rise to a broad range of problems. This paper surveys the efforts undertaken by labor unions to respond to these problems, including: child and elder care, health care, transportation, access to community services, alternative work schedules, vacations and leaves for both parents, and choice, according to changing need, among a variety of employee benefit plans.
