Unit topics include: general physical and cultural characteristics of the African continent; the social, political, and economic role of families in selected African ethnic groups; early African civilizations; human developments in African countries from European contact through independence movements; the ways in which African people in selected countries meet contemporary challenges; the global concept of interdependency as it relates to African nations and the rest of the world; and the contributions of people of African heritage to U.S. history, culture, and growth.
