CUHK Papers in Linguistics No. 2, Aug 1990.
Chinese Univ. of Hong Kong, Kowloon.
Five papers on linguistics contained in this issue include the following: "Tones for Profoundly Deaf Tone-Language Speakers" (Teresa Y. C. Ching), a study using a simplified speech pattern approach to enhance perception of tonal contrasts in Cantonese; "Word Formation and the Limits of Analytic Equivalence" (Peter Crisp), a discussion of the relationship between complex words such as "man-eater and self-locking" and phrases such as "eats men and locks itself"; "Interlanguage Ergative Constructions and Learning" (Virginia Yip), which examines a class of interlanguage structures where passivization is commonly overextended to ergative verbs by Chinese learners of English; "Vowel Devoicing in Shanghai" (Eric Zee), a phonetic study of vowel devoicing in a tone language, a Chinese dialect; and "Some Notes on Dialect in Recent English Literature" (Mark Newbrook), which draws attention to the scope of dialectological investigation in literature more recent than that usually studied.
