This synthesis paper provides a state-of-the-art analysis of the field of library and information science based on the results of a content analysis of its literature, including selected journals, conference proceedings, dissertations, and ERIC input. The 14 trends and issues identified by the analysis include developments in technology, management, services, professional education, research and the field. The following trends are discussed: (1) the demand for and provision of end-user access to computer-based information resources; (2) the increase of networks and telecommunications in libraries; (3) the continued growth of CD-ROM technology; (4) the focus on collection management activities by libraries; (5) output-oriented planning and evaluation processes in libraries; (6) libraries' concern with reaching new user groups; (7) literacy promotion; (8) information literacy promotion; (9) the expanded roles and responsibilities of library and information professionals; (10) continuing professional education opportunities; (11) bibliometrics; (12) new research involving artificial intelligence; (13) the continuing challenges to intellectual freedom and to intellectual property rights; and (14) the impact "Information Power: Guidelines for Library Media Programs," a 1988 joint publication of the American Association of School Librarians and the Association for Educational Communications and Technology.
