Computer Conferencing for Collaborative Learning in Large College Classes. Final Report of a Grant Project Conducted by the Division.
Hansen, Edmund; And Others
This project sought to explore the educational potential of three models of a University of Indiana computer conferencing technology in facilitating collaborative learning and enhancing social interaction in instructional contexts that provide limited face-to-face contact among the students. The study examined each of the three models of computer conferencing technology, one which allowed class discussion to continue beyond regular class time, one which permitted students to share individual and group project products in preparation for further discussion, and a third which allowed for collaborative test preparation. By examining the products generated in the conferencing medium, and by looking at the classroom process itself, the study found that instructors had increased their use of interactive conferencing to post announcements, grades and so on, and that students took to "e-mail" or electronic mail quite easily but did not favor the Electronic Classroom citing access problems, and awkward software applications. However, in instances where EC was successful, there was less student anonymity, and greater class participation. These instances of success came about through instructor support of the technology, through appropriate course structuring, and with careful modeling of use on the part of the instructor. The report includes 18 references and 9 appendixes which contain survey instruments and details of the study data. (JB)
