Contracting with Architects: A School District's Perspective.
Levin, Michael I.
The National School Boards Association's Council of Attorneys has designed this monograph to assist school attorneys and administrators involved in school construction projects to know how to select a qualified architect, understand the relationship between an architect and school district, and prepare to negotiate a contract with an architect. The focus is on negotiating amendments to standard form contracts produced by the American Institute of Architects (AIA). An overview of the AIA owner-architect agreement presents suggested substitutions and negotiations for all 12 articles: (1) Architect's Responsibilities; (2) Scope of Architect's Basic Services; (3) Additional Services; (4) Owner's Responsibilities; (5) Construction Cost; (6) Use of Architect's Drawings, Specifications and Other Documents; (7) Arbitration; (8) Termination, Suspension, or Abandonment; (9) Miscellaneous Provisions; (10) Payments to the Architect; (11) Basis of Compensation; and (12) Other Considerations or Services. How to attach a "rider" that sets forth deletions, amendments, and additions to the standard form agreement is explained. (EJS)
