In-School Student Chamber of Commerce Program.
Dade County Public Schools, Miami, FL.
An In-School Student Chamber of Commerce Enhancement Program was established in elementary, middle, and senior high school settings in Dade County, Florida. The student Chamber, modeled after the local Chamber, serves as a role model in the following ways: (1) by guiding students to develop a Chamber; (2) by teaching students about the work world; and (3) by showing students how business people serve a community. Each student Chamber develops a blueprint for action that identifies priority goals and projects. Each student Chamber maintains records, financial reports, and learns parliamentary procedures. There are five steps for establishing a student Chamber: (1) orientation; (2) starting a student Chamber; (3) activities for the role model Chamber; (4) structuring the work groups by forming committees; and (5) reports and records. In addition, student Chambers play a part in breaking barriers to employment by exploring careers through job interviews. The Dade County Chamber provides a scholarship to a ninth-grade student in the public school system. (This document includes student chamber pre/posttests, chamber and school organizational charts and forms, scholarship application, program evaluation information, and the Florida Department of Education's "Blueprint for Career Preparation.")
