Basic Skills for Professionalization: Preparing Teachers for Alternative Job Roles.
Peterson, Margaret B.
This practicum was implemented to assist teachers who were investigating the possibility of participation in school-based management shared decision-making initiatives at a local school level. The particular focus was to assist the teachers to make decisions based on knowledge and to supply information about the appropriate manipulation of time and tasks. An inservice activity was designed to identify the needs of the participants and respond to them in large and small groups as well as in individual sessions. An assessment instrument was used to determine the participants' perceptions of their information base. The 10-session inservice activity included topics such as national initiatives for professionalization of teaching, self assessment, stages of teacher development, preparation of a career life plan, and the organization of time and tasks. The inservice activity was evaluated using both written and oral questions. The participants indicated through their responses that the workshop sessions were valuable for each on an individual basis when making career choices. The suggestion was made that this information should be included in the inservice activities required for first year teachers. Evaluation instruments are appended. (Author/LLL)
