Insights: Museums, Visitors, Attitudes, Expectations. A Focus Group Experiment.
Getty Center for Education in the Arts, Los Angeles, CA.; J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, CA.
This report summarizes the findings of a research project involving a consortium of American art museums that joined forced to understand themselves better from the perspective of their visitors. The project had three objectives: (1) to identify staff expectations and impressions of public expectations about art museums; (2) to evaluate public expectations about art museums and compare them to actual experiences; and (3) to explore educational insights of visitors and nonvisitors of art museums. Eleven art museums participated in this project and focus group methodology was used. Five to six focus groups were conducted for each of the museums. Divided into three parts, part 1 of the report contains the summary of the museum focus groups and outlines the major findings for the following topics: staff expectations; nonvisitation; museum experience; orientation; information; layout and organization; physical surroundings and presentations; communication of benefits; and employees. Part 2 presents the proceedings of a colloquium held in Phoenix, Arizona, November 15-18, 1989, concerning the focus group experiment. Part 3 consists of Museum Project synopses. Each participating museum was looking for visitor reactions to different projects. Summaries describe these projects, their perceived needs, objectives, and estimated expenses. A list of colloquium participants concludes the report. (KM)
